The 1,000 cruzeiros of the 1980s honours the historian and diplomat José Maria da Silva Paranhos, Baron of Rio Branco (1845–1912). The back shows a theodolite and a topographic map, the tools of surveying. Held to the light, it shows a watermark portrait of the Baron of Rio Branco.
The Banco Central do Brasil series of the early 1980s was printed at the Casa da Moeda do Brasil and circulated until the 1986 currency reform, when the cruzado replaced the cruzeiro at a thousand to one. Type P201 was printed from 1981 to 1986 and falls into several signature varieties.
For a Brazil collection it is the highest of the classic values of the early-1980s series, and next to the 5-cruzeiro notes of the 1940s–1960s it rounds off the long presence of the Baron of Rio Branco on Brazilian money. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
The VPcoins catalogue features banknotes from many countries, making it easy to build a collection by geography or by subject.
